Music Poster

The purpose of this project was to create a poster that related to both a song and a graphic designer. The song chosen for this project was “Boredom” by Tyler, The Creator; and the chosen graphic designer was Saul Bass. The target audience was fans of Tyler, The Creator; but also just music in general. The design of the poster was intended relate back to both “Boredom” and Saul Bass. “Boredom” is about making the time for other people as well as using time wisely. The song has a warm ambiance, with use of sounds like an electric guitar and synthesizers. These bright, fluttery, sounds are juxtaposed with heavy bass and drums. Saul Bass is known for having more of a simplistic, blocky, style. Often times his work would also have a brightly colored background. The style of Saul Bass is perfect for “Boredom.” The blocky style seen in many of his works is great for representing the bass and drums; and the brightly colored background is great for representing the warmth of the synthesizers, vocals, and guitar.

For the final design there were many different ideas present. The flower has a very blocky, Saul-Bass style stem, which is supposed to be reminiscent of the arm in his poster for the movie “The Man With The Golden Arm.” The rest of the flower is done with rounded shapes and is much less blocky. This represents the more fluid sounds that lie on top of the bass and drums in the song. The idea of the flower comes from the album “Boredom” can be found on; titled “Flower Boy.” The clock on the inside of the flower relates specifically to the song “Boredom” which has time as a motif. The leaves within the clock continue the flower imagery and serve as the hands of the clock. The font used is called DoubleBass and is very reminiscent of fonts used by Saul Bass himself. The color palette is inspired by the color palette of the album cover itself, as well as the warm sounds that can be found in the song. One final part of the composition is that the flower is centered within the page; this is also something that can be found in many of Saul Bass’ works. The final output of this project was supposed to be a printed poster. The design does a good job of combining both the influences from “Boredom” and Saul Bass in a way that feels unified, yet is still original to this project.

Above is another poster that was created for this project, but was not used as the final version. The poster was also inspired by a song from Tyler, The Creators album “Flower Boy.” In this instance the song was “Who Dat Boy.” The visual was inspired by a scene from the music video.
